Why a city of 160,000 keeps producing American-grade engineers
Split is not an obvious place for a software industry. It is a Mediterranean port city better known for its Roman palace than its engineering output. But over the last two decades it has become one of the strongest software talent markets in this part of Europe, and it developed that way for a specific reason: it grew up serving American companies.
Some of the earliest US startups to open engineering offices outside the United States chose Split. They hired locally, trained people to US delivery standards, and worked in US business hours. Several of those companies went on to significant acquisitions. The engineers stayed, and so did the working culture — direct communication, written documentation, ownership of outcomes rather than tickets.
That is the pool Quantum bit recruits from. We are not introducing American clients to an offshore market. We are introducing them to people who have been working for American clients their entire careers.
Built on a network, not a sales pitch
Quantum bit's founder, Bruno Batarelo, was branch manager of one of the first US startups to establish an engineering presence in Split — WHERE, Inc., the Boston location-media company. WHERE was acquired by eBay Inc. in 2011 and folded into its PayPal business unit, an acquisition driven substantially by the team and the technology.
Running that office meant two things that the company still runs on. The first is a working knowledge of the local engineering community — who is good, who is available, and who will actually hold up under the demands of a distributed US team. The second is an established presence on the US East Coast: the client relationships, and the credibility to make an introduction that a hiring manager will take seriously.
Over the years since, that network has connected a great many talented people in Split to companies on the other side of the Atlantic. Quantum bit was founded in 2014 to do it deliberately, and to take responsibility for the delivery rather than just the introduction.
Principles that show up in the invoices
Our longest client relationship ran for a decade. Several others have run five years or more. We would rather be the team a client keeps than the vendor they rotate.
We staff engagements with people who can be left alone with an ambiguous problem. That is more expensive per hour and cheaper per outcome.
Central European Time gives a genuine working overlap with the US East Coast every afternoon, and a full shared day with European clients. Nothing waits overnight for an answer.
Whether we are supplying one engineer or an entire team, someone at Quantum bit is accountable for whether the thing works. We have operated as the functional engineering extension of client organisations for years at a time on that basis.
